When I took a cab home (intending to petty cash the bill) and a homeless man meandered up to the window, the driver rolled down the window and gave him some change.
I don't think the cab driver is any more noble or empathetic than the towncar driver. I think maybe they were making assumptions about what I would prefer.
Neither of them know I am intimidated by homeless people because they approach me. It's that--the asking, the looking, the intrusion--I don't like, not necessarily the outward appearance.
