Something I saw

When I took a black towncar home from the office, and a homeless man meandered up to the window with a cup, the driver locked the door.

When I took a cab home (intending to petty cash the bill) and a homeless man meandered up to the window, the driver rolled down the window and gave him some change.

I don't think the cab driver is any more noble or empathetic than the towncar driver.  I think maybe they were making assumptions about what I would prefer.

Neither of them know I am intimidated by homeless people because they approach me.  It's that--the asking, the looking, the intrusion--I don't like, not necessarily the outward appearance.
